For the more independent student, Manly hosts a variety of housing options, and students seeking residential accommodation can choose from Backpackers, Guesthouses, Apartments and Shared Accommodation.
More expensive than a backpacker but with higher standards, guesthouses generally provide
private rooms with a shared bath.
Backpackers (or hostels as they are also known) are an inexpensive option, and generally
include a bunk bed in a shared room with a shared bathroom, kitchen and laundry facilities
available. Prices in Manly vary between $18 and $30 per night, with weekly rates being
cheaper. Rooms are generally readily available, although advance reservations should be
made in peak season. Some of Manly's backpackers include:
The local paper advertises houses, flats, apartments and shared accommodation for rent throughout the
Manly area. In addition, we also have an Accommodation Notice Board in the College where other students
and local residents advertise rooms, flats, apartments and shared houses. New places are advertised daily.
It is up to the student to visit these places, interview with the current tenants, and submit an application.
There is no guarantee that an application will be accepted. Once an application is accepted, a student
may have to post a bond of 1-2 months rent, as well as pay for 1-2 months rent in advance.
We recommend that students seeking shared accommodation or an apartment book a Homestay, Backpacker or Guesthouse prior to their arrival and then explore the other housing options.
Shared accommodation prices range from $100 to $250 per week, depending on inclusion of electricity, gas, food, etc.
As Manly is a holiday destination, short-term furnished and unfurnished apartments are generally available but can be expensive. Prices range from $630-$1400 per week for furnished and $200-$700 for unfurnished. International House Sydney students have stayed in these furnished short term rental apartments:
Prices at March 2006, subject to change without notice.
