Accredited by ASQA ( Australian Skills and Qualifications Authority), this Certificate IV in TESOL course is a highly practical yet flexible course which introduces you to current teaching methods, practical teaching ideas and a range of TESOL resources. A major component of the course is your teaching practice.

International House Sydney - Teacher Training and Professional Centre now offers a blended learning programme for greater flexibility in course delivery. The qualification is gained by completing the following steps:

  1. Part 1: minimum 60 hour interactive on-line TESOL methodology component
  2. Part 2: completing 6 hours of assessed teaching practice at our training centre in Sydney plus tutor consultation before and after teaching (minimum 10 hours) plus observations of language classes

After competent completion of all parts of the course, a Certificate IV in TESOL will be awarded to the participant.

Designed for:

Native English speakers and non-native (pre-advanced and above) who want to enter the English language teaching profession. It is also suitable for experienced teachers who want to further develop their communicative language teaching (CLT) skills through the strong focus on practical teaching.

The course is accredited by ASQA in Australia and has a growing international recognition.

The certificate is part of the Australian Qualifications Framework and meets the standards of NEAS, the National ELT Accreditation Scheme for entry level into accredited English language colleges. Certification is issued by International House Sydney upon successful completion of the course. Trainees who complete part of the programme will be issued with a statement of attainment outlining the competencies that they achieved.

Certificate IV in TESOL is gaining great credibility internationally as a quality entry level TESOL qualification.

Study pathways

Many universities in Australia will offer holders of Certificate IV in TESOL credit towards study in TESOL related degree programmes. For example, graduates of the Certificate IV in TESOL can gain one subject credit towards further TESOL studies at the University of Canberra. Candidates must apply separately to the university.

 

Certification & Recognition

On successful completion of the course you will receive a Certificate IV in TESOL qualification. This is recognised nationally and widely recognised in Singapore, Korea, Thailand, China and Japan. Qualifications at Certificate IV level are also becoming increasingly recognised internationally.

 

Course Content

  • TESOL methodology & language analysis including:
      1. teaching speaking skills
      2. teaching writing skills
      3. teaching reading skills
      4. teaching listening skills
      5. developing learner’s language knowledge
      6. preparing language lessons using reference materials
      7. planning and evaluation of lessons
      8. evaluating TESOL teaching materials for classroom use
      9. managing the English language classroom
      10. managing the teaching and learning environment
      11. developing teacher professionalism
      12. understanding different learner styles and motivation to teaching
      13. applying knowledge of learner cultural and linguistic backgrounds to teaching
      14. applying knowledge of similarities and difference between English and LOTE to teaching
      15. using basic concepts and grammar terminology
      16. using basic lexical and phonological terminology
  • four hours observation of qualified teachers
  • six hours of observed and assessed teaching practice 
  • The units of competency are as follows:

    Assessment

    • You will be required to complete six hours of assessed teaching practice, which is conducted with real classes.
    • You will also complete assessed written assignments and online tasks.
    • There is no final examination.

     

    Entry Criteria

    • All candidates must be at least 18 years of age.
    • A student visa is not available for this course.
    • You are not required to have previous teaching experience or the ability to speak a second language.

     

    Course Length

    A minimum of 106 hours of tuition content is included:

    Online learning: minimum 60 hours over 8 modules: This will involve working together with other trainees on the online module along with a moderator.

    Observations of experienced teachers: You will watch or attend 4 hours of classes by experienced teachers throughout the course.

    Teaching practice: 6 hours of assessed teaching practice with your tutor and receiving help with preparation prior and feedback after each lesson taught. Altogether there is a minimum of 40 hours work in the teaching practice, which is mostly preparation.
